Earthquake triggering and large-scale geologic storage of carbon dioxide.

چکیده
Despite its enormous cost, large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) is considered a viable strategy for significantly reducing CO(2) emissions associated with coal-based electrical power generation and other industrial sources of CO(2) [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (2005) IPCC Special Report on Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage. Prepared by Working Group III of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, eds Metz B, et al. (Cambridge Univ Press, Cambridge, UK); Szulczewski ML, et al. (2012) Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 109:5185-5189]. We argue here that there is a high probability that earthquakes will be triggered by injection of large volumes of CO(2) into the brittle rocks commonly found in continental interiors. Because even small- to moderate-sized earthquakes threaten the seal integrity of CO(2) repositories, in this context, large-scale CCS is a risky, and likely unsuccessful, strategy for significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Characterization for Storage of CO2 in Deep Geological Formations
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is the lead Federal agency for the development and deployment of carbon sequestration technologies. As part of its mission to facilitate technology transfer and develop guidelines from lessons learned, DOE is developing a series of best practice manuals (BPMs) for carbon capture and storage (CCS). The ―Site Screening, Site Selection, and Initial Characterizat...
متن کاملOptimal Spatial Deployment of Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage Given a Price on Carbon Dioxide
Carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) links together technologies that separate carbon dioxide (CO2) from fixed point source emissions and transport it by pipeline to geologic reservoirs into which it is injected underground for long-term containment. Previously, models have been developed to minimize the cost of a CCS infrastructure network that captures a given amount of CO2. The CCS proce...
متن کاملSeismic Triggering Mechanisms of Large–scale Landslides, Valles Marineris
Large–scale landslides in Valles Marineris wallrock are analyzed in order to determine what triggering mechanisms caused the landslides. These landslides occur in the locality of large faults, and therefore it is hypothesized that the landslides are the result of marsquakes triggering slope instability. This work confirms that landslides occur where the seismic hazard map forecasts highest seis...
متن کاملNatural Analogs for Geologic Storage of CO2: An Integrated Global Research Program
Coordinated research efforts are underway on three continents (North America, Europe, Australia) to study naturally occurring carbon dioxide deposits, in order to address fundamental questions and concerns about the long-term storage of CO2 in geologic formations. Natural accumulations of carbon dioxide exist in many geologic basins. Some deposits are stored in secure and impermeable traps, whe...
متن کاملSignificance of Conceptual Model Uncertainty in Simulating Carbon Sequestration in a Deep Inclined Saline Aquifer
In modeling geologic carbon sequestration in a deep inclined aquifer in Wyoming, the impact of geologic, engineering, and environmental uncertainty factors on parameter importance and prediction uncertainty is evaluated. Given site characterization data, a suite of geologic model families were built to represent aquifer permeability heterogeneity at increasing complexity. With each family, the ...
